Margaret Wintringham
Margaret Wintringham was born in Oldfield on the 4th of August 1879. She was first British-born woman, to take her seat in the House of Commons as a member of the Liberal Party and served from 1921 to 1924. She died on the 10th of March 1955 and to celebrate her achievements, The Yorkshire Society have commissioned the creation of a commemorative plaque to be placed on the drive at Oldfield School.
The project has been financed from the Town Council and a special ceremony will be organised following the easing of Covid 19 restrictions.
Cllr Luke Maunsell said, “Oldfield has a long and interesting history and it is only right that the Town Council have agreed to acknowledge a key moment in this. Margaret Wintringham, alongside many of those early, female, pioneers led the way for fairer representation in Parliament and we must remember their vital work. I would like to thank Oldfield School and residents, Tim Clapham – a distant relative of Margaret – and Eric Bishop for ensuring this work got off the ground.”
