Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been marked across the world on Monday 8 March. It is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The theme for 2021 is ‘Choose To Challenge’. A challenged world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change.
We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.
In previous years, Keighley Town Council have supported events in the town to mark the day. This year, as with everything, things look very different. Groups and business are all doing their own thing, as restrictions will allow. There have been many Zoom meetings, led by Diane Law, Excel Youth Co-ordinator at Highfield Community Association, to try and pull everything together.
Keighley Town Council, have made a short film, highlighting ‘Women in Leadership Roles’, which include the Deputy Mayor and 4 of the Committee Chairs. This film will be shared on Monday 8 March on Keighley Town Council’s Social Media.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Julie Adams says: “We at Keighley Town Council are again happy to support International Women’s Day. It will be somewhat restricted this year, however, around the world we will still be dedicated to honouring the achievements of women through history and hopefully, women from all cultures will continue the fight for gender equality.”
Cllr Samantha Cooper, Chair of Community Development Committee says: “This year international women’s day looks and feels very different. We’re still marking the occasion online and in Keighley’s creative spaces thanks to the hard work of Keighley’s wonderful societies and agencies. I don’t think there could be a better focus point to represent the last year than “choose to challenge” because even when it’s not the easiest path we choose to see, and to recognise the contribution that at all women make to our society, and pledge to always choose to keep that momentum day by day, no matter the challenges.”
