Charity Lock

On Friday 5 November, three brave people entered the old police cells to be locked in for 48 hours. Town Mayor Cllr Julie Adams, John Lawless and Chris Bridges were ‘arrested’ and locked in a cell with just basic supplies and their phone. Their challenge was to raise a £500 bail fee in order to escape.

Over the duration of the weekend, over £3600 was raised for the Mayor’s Charitable Trust which this year is supporting Sue Ryder Manorlands and Martin House Hospice.

Former England Rugby League player Ikram Butt visited the prisoners over the weekend to lift their spirits and delight them with a cup of tea.

Town Mayor Cllr Julie Adams said ‘‘John Lawless, Chris Bridges and I had a very interesting 48 hours in the, what I can only describe as, bitterly cold cells. Our spirits were kept up by the fabulous donations and the volunteers who took care of use over the weekend with food and hot beverages! The money we have raised for the Mayor’s Charitable Trust has made it all worthwhile.’

The Mayors Charitable Trust’s next fundraising event will be the Mayor’s Civic dinner in March 2022.
